Fitness and Forest School Friday!

I think we definitely deserve to take another square off our reward chart on Monday morning; we have had such an amazing few days.

We kicked our Children in Need Friday off with a Big Morning Move with Body Coach Joe Wickes in the hall with reception and Y1 and 2. We only had time for a quick breather in class before it was right out onto the playground for our sponsored activities. How many laps could we do in the playground within ten minutes- something we’ve had plenty of practice with during our daily mile! So we smashed that one (obviously). Then over to the ropes for a 2 minute skip challenge. I can’t believe how much they have improved since we first introduced the Skip2BFit days. We had 4 separate turns with a minute or two rest in between and I think it’s safe to say that everyone managed to beat their first score so well done Y3!

Jessica is going for gold!

I love how the tongues come out when we’re concentrating really hard!!

Then we just had time to squeeze in a spelling test; or at least some of us did- the rest were busy doing an art activity with Ms Brown (and I’m not kidding when I say some of them were gutted to miss the spelling test!) . The final product is sure to be amazing, they look absolutely incredible so far.  They had obviously got their creative juices flowing because we went out to forest school split into our groups again, we created some superb natural portraits. We even found some sneaky creatures wanting to take part too!

Carousels make me dizzy!

Today we’ve taken a bit of a detour from writing in books to really reinforce some of those really important skills that form the foundations for more complicated work. Some of the games we played would be really easy to do at home so please feel free to have a go yourselves! (Then maybe some day you’ll beat me on TT 😉 )

First up was a game called ‘War’. Players take turns playing one card- both players are racing to multiply this number by 4. First person to say it correctly gets to keep the card. Player with the most cards at the end, wins.

Next we moved to Division Pairs: Played like regular pairs where you turn over two cards at a time, but rather than being identical the matches will be the dividend (the number you’re dividing) and the quotient (the number produced from the division) of the 4 times tables e.g. 20 would match with 5 because 20 divided by 4 is 5.

Finally, we played Spiral maths. The cards serve as the board for the game. Starting in the middle, you roll your dice and move your counter that number of spaces. Whatever you land on you multiply by four; if you get it right you stay, get it wrong and you go back to where you were. Just to add a little extra tension to the mix- if you land on a card that already has someone on it and you get it wrong, they’re safe and you go back BUT if you get it right then they get sent all the way back to the start! Poor W got sent back at least 5 times in one game! But he still managed to enjoy himself 😀

So the games themselves are fairly straightfoward but a really easy and fun way to drill the fluency!

Forest School

Had such a great start to our Forest School sessions! We split half and half, 14 stayed with Ms Brown in the Forest while the others stayed with me and created self-portraits using materials we gathered along the embankment. We then began looking at shadows and reflections as part of our Big Idea and had a little competition to see how could capture the most interesting reflection. Have a look at some of our work…

Bring Your Bike to School Day!

Bring Your Bike to School Day was such a big success (as you can see from the big grins!) so thank you all for helping make it happen! Hopefully we can make it a more regular thing…

Fact- sticking your tongue out helps you concentrate!

No Bike? No Problem…. all modes of transport welcome!

We love maths!

What an incredible start to Year 3 we’ve had! The progress that we have made in maths so far has blown me away and I am so proud of the resilience and positive attitudes shown in class. We now get, dare I say… excited about maths!

It may be something to do with the fact that in these lessons we’ve been allowed to write on tables and stand on chairs; something every 7-8 year old dreams of I would guess based on their reactions! We also try and take our learning outside and keep it active to get our brains really kicked into gear. Here’s a few pictures of some of the activities we’ve been doing.

More than, less than or equal to?

Hop if its odd, jump if it’s even. Shout a number fact as you jump over it, who can be the last one standing?
