Summer 2 Term 2 – ‘I am a HISTORIAN’.

Our main topics linked to our Big Idea this half term will be History, Science, Design and Technology and Art. Our learning in History will drive our Big Idea and we will be learning all about the Invasion of Britain by the Roman Army. We will also explore what the Romans brought to Britain, considering architecture, infrastructure, culture, beliefs, laws and language. We will be exploring States of Matter in Science learning about the effects of heating and cooling on solids liquids and gases. In Art and Design we will be making Roman bulla pouches from felt and designing and making fastenings for these.

Our English learning this half term is going to be based on Romans on a Rampage by Jeremy Strong and a variety of setting images. We will be focusing on writing a detailed description of a setting then writing a newspaper report about one of the characters who ends up in jail!

Summer Term 1 – ‘I am an ECO-WARRIOR!’

Our English learning this half term is going to be based around the high quality texts – Earth Heroes by Lily Dyu and Earth Poem – anonymous. We will start by exploring rhyming structure in poetry and creating our own poems, then move onto letter writing linked to our text, Earth Heroes. In maths we will be continuing developing our knowledge of fractions, building on what we have learnt in previous years. We will then be moving on to decimals and converting between fractions and decimals.

Big Idea: I am and Eco Warrior! Our main topics linked to our Big Idea this half term will be geography, science, design and technology and art. We will be exploring electricity in science and using our knowledge of circuits and conductors in DT to design and make our own torches. In art we will be exploring sculpture and creating our own pieces of art from recycled and/ or natural resources. Our geography links to mountains where we will learn about mountains in the UK and other parts of the world.

Art:

In art, we have been focusing on drawing techniques and sculpture. We have spent time studying bird nests and creating drawings of them using different mediums (graphite, pencil, wax crayons and ink, charcoal and chalk). We also foraged for natural materials that birds may use to build a nest and formed a sculpture using these materials and clay to bind it together. Finally, we spent time drawing our own nests from observation.

Spring Term 2 – ‘ I am part of a DIVERSSE WORLD!’

Our English learning this half term is going to be based around the high quality texts- Journey to Jo’burg by Beverley Naidoo and Great Women who changed the World by Kate Pankhurst. We will focus on narrative and story writing in lessons and how to add punctuation to speech. In maths we will be continuing developing our knowledge of written methods for multiplication and division and multiplying and dividing larger numbers. We will then be moving on to length and finding perimeter.

Big Idea- Cross curricular- Our main topics linked to our Big Idea this half term will be History and Art. In History we will be learning all about John Blanke and why his is such a significant historical figure. To land our Big Idea we will be celebrating across school with ‘Culture Week’. We will cover Place Knowledge linked to Geography and compare and contrast an area of the UK with a European country.

Spring Term 1 – ‘ I am an ARTIST!’

Our English learning this half term is going to be based around free verse poetry, where the children will look a range of poems, learn about imagery (similes, metaphors, personification, idioms) then write and perform their own.

In Maths we will be focusing on multiplication and division. We will be learning how to use our existing knowledge and build on our skills so that recall of our multiplication and division facts is instant. We will also be covering new learning of factors and factor pairs and written methods for multiplication.

We will be focusing on art, design and technology, science, geography and music. In design technology we will be making pop up books with moving mechanisms and in art we will choose a famous artist to study. In science we will be learning all about sound and how vibrations travel through a medium to our ears. We will be covering locational knowledge in geography and learning about our longest rivers, highest mountains and how our country is split into counties. Music will involve learning a song to perform as a class.

 

Autumn Term 2 – ‘I am an EXPLORER!’

We are excited to dive into our new Big Idea topic which will be focused around history and we will be travelling back in time to Ancient Greece. Our English work will be driven by the high quality text ‘A Visitor’s Guide to Ancient Greece’. Children will study this book as a model to write their own visitors guide to Ancient Greece using the knowledge they learn during our history lessons. We will also share ‘Mark of the Cyclops’ as our class story to find out more about this ancient culture.

Our Science work for this half term explores Living things and their habitats. Our learning in Science builds on the foundations of knowledge from Year 1 upwards and children will be grouping and and classifying animals in different ways, studying and gathering data on animals in our local environment and looking at the impact we have on the environment around us both positive and negative.

We were so lucky to have a visit from Miss Agar, who is a published illustrator. She shared her sketch book, image boards and books then we had a sketching workshop where we drew characters showing different emotions.

Autumn Term 1 – ‘ I am part of my community’

The Church as a Genuine Community? – APOSTOLIC INFORMATION SERVICE

Our first week back sees the first RE week of the year, in which we are looking at ‘belonging and community’ in the Islamic faith. We are focusing our learning around a wonderful book named ‘The Proudest Blue’ by Ibtihaj Muhammed.

 

Following on from RE week, will be the launch of our first Year 4 Big Idea theme, named ‘I am part of my community’. In English, we will read a story called ‘Teacup’ by Rebecca Young and base our first piece of fictional writing on this. In geography and history, we will be studying local settlements and visiting an old Roman site in Aldborough. We will be learning all about humans, including animals in our topic in science which we will also link to our food technology sessions.
